In 1991, the armies of Iraq invaded Kuwait to claim the nation’s oil wealth (some accounts would say Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was miffed about the price of oil affected by Kuwait’s production levels.) In response, a coalition of nations sent military forces to the Gulf and established itself in the surrounding countries (Operation Desert Shield) and an assault on Iraqi forces commenced (Operation Desert Storm.) As Iraqi forces retreated, an estimated 700 oil wells were blown both for military advantages and to deny the Kuwaiti nation its oil resources.
From the extent of the fire pollution, dire estimates of environmental harm were predicted, from massive global cooling to direct harm from smoke and particles. The effort to put out the burning wells had been estimated to take up to several years. From the efforts of nearly 40,000 personnel from several nations, that goal was achieved that in less than one.
